WASHINGTON â€" First came the Tuesday afternoon tweet:
“Shhh!†Michelle Obama declared, “Barack, Bo and I are about to surprise folks on White House tours! I love doing this.â€
Then came the President, First Lady and First Canine, Bo, to serve as a receiving line for apparently surprised Obama reelection campaign volunteers.
The volunteers â€" in town for the inauguration â€" were clearly thrilled as the First Couple offered hugs and informal chit-chat, asking where they were from, what they did and even how long one couple had been dating.
The President thanked them for their labors and said he recalled specific events they had staffed.
Precious little is impromptu in modern politics, certainly not an encounter which was live-streamed by the White House over the Web. But it projected down-to-earth accessibility by two millionaire Harvard graduates from humble origins. It’s not the air of unattainable Camelot fantasy associated with the White House of the Kennedys.
