Sandy Hook Elementary School teacher Victoria Soto, who gave her life in Newtown massacre trying to shield her students, should be remembered by having new school in her hometown of Stratford, Conn., named for her, says the town's mayor.

A NEW SCHOOL being planned in Stratford, Conn., should be named for hometown hero Victoria Soto, who died protecting her students, the town’s mayor said Monday.

“We must make sure her sacrifice is never forgotten,” said Mayor John Harkins, who wants the school to carry her name.

Soto, 27, was killed along with five other staffers and 20 first-graders at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14. She was able to hide some students from the deranged gunman but paid for it with her own life.

The Stratford City Council will meet Jan. 14 to take up Harkins’ proposal. If all goes as planned, the Victoria L. Soto Elementary School could open next summer.

Investigators of the Newtown shooting are still finding new details about lone shooter Adam Lanza â€" including that the 20-year-old wore earplugs when he carried out his carnage.

Investigators aren’t sure if Lanza â€" who was a regular visitor to the shooting range with his mom â€" popped in the plugs out of habit, or did it deliberately to block the screams of his small victims, according to the Hartford Courant.

“It’s just weird given what he was about to go do,” a source told the Courant.

“It’s not like he had to worry about long-term protection of his hearing because he had to know he wasn’t coming back out of the building.”
