Bette Midler's new drama, 'I'll Eat You Last,' will be her first time back on Broadway since 1980.Â
The Divine Miss M back on Broadway? You Bette!
In the spring, Midler will play famed Tinseltown agent Sue Mengers in a one-character drama by John Logan, who won a Tony for âRed,â his drama about the artist Mark Rothko.
âIâll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengersâ marks the first time Midler has appeared in a Broadway show since 1980, when she glided across the stage in a mermaid getup in the bawdy, big-hearted âBette! Divine Madness.â
In her â70s heyday in Hollywood, Mengers, who died in 2011 at age 79, was known for her own larger-than-life antics and her own brand of spectacle.
Mengers assembled an enviable Rolodex of A-list clients â" from Barbra Streisand and Steve McQueen to Faye Dunaway and Michael Caine. She later became the townâs hostess with the mostest.
âI adored Sue, and no trip to Los Angeles was complete without a dinner at her place,â stated Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, one of the showâs producers.
Logan met Mengers at one of these bashes and was instantly struck by her âwicked wit and stevedore language,â along with her âsense of sadness, a deep resignation; a woman whose time had passed her by.â
Midler, a Grammy, Emmy and special Tony winner, began her Broadway career as an understudy and replacement cast member in the original production of âFiddler on the Roof.â
Since then, sheâs been on Broadway in concert shows and produced the 2011 musical âPriscilla Queen of the Desert.â
âIâll Eat You Lastâ will be directed by Joe Mantello and open April 24 at a theater to be announced.
